Paraguay defeated Chile 3-0 in a World Cup qualifying match.

The Daily Mail: “Chile’s World Cup qualification campaign took another blow against Paraguay.

With Alexis Sanchez in their side, the Chileans were soundly beaten on home turf on Thursday night thanks to an own goal from Arturo Vidal and strikes from Victor Carceres and Richard Ortiz in the second half.

The win gives Paraguay renewed hope of making it to the finals in Russia. For Chile, there is a very real prospect of dropping out of the four automatic places.

Paraguay had the lead midway through the first half courtesy of an own goal from Juventus midfielder Vidal.

Oscar Romero lobbed in a free-kick from close to halfway and Vidal, perhaps losing his bearings slightly, sent a diving header into the top right-hand corner of the net.

The lead doubled 10 minutes into the second period.

A fortunate ricochet ran into the path of Caceres in the penalty area and his shot broke through the despairing dive of Claudio Bravo.

It was another frustrating night for Sanchez, after a deadline day which saw him remain at Arsenal.

The forward hardly got a look-in and, with Manchester City’s unsuccessful pursuit of his services fresh in his mind, he was unable to inspire a Chile fightback.

And in the end Paraguay pounced again. With Chile pouring upfield in stoppage time, the visitors caught their hosts on the break and Ortiz picked his spot low to Bravo’s left.
